Surprise, AZ Homeowner Shoots Intruder in Early Morning Break-In; Suspect Faces Multiple Felonies

Date:

SURPRISE, AZ – A dramatic early morning defense unfolded in Surprise, Arizona, as a homeowner confronted two intruders, leading to a shooting that resulted in non-life-threatening injuries for one suspect.

On April 22, 2024, shortly after 4 a.m., local law enforcement was alerted to a potential break-in at a residence near the intersection of 140th Avenue and Waddell Road. The homeowner, alert to the intrusion, quickly informed the authorities and within a short period confirmed having taken defensive action by firing at the intruders.

The situation escalated when another 9-1-1 call came in, reporting a gunshot victim found approximately a block away from the initial home invasion scene. The injured party was identified as 19-year-old Kason Nelson, who sustained injuries from the encounter and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital.

During the ensuing police investigation, it was revealed that Nelson, along with a juvenile accomplice, had not randomly targeted the home. Both individuals were known to a tenant residing with the homeowner, suggesting a possible familiarity with the property. Despite initial claims of visiting the tenant, evidence gathered by the police, including the discovery of a firearm, pointed to a clear intent to commit burglary.

Nelson, who is legally barred from possessing firearms, faces several serious charges including first-degree burglary, misconduct involving weapons, and theft. The juvenile was charged with second-degree burglary and is currently held at the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center.

This incident underscores the critical importance of home security and the right to defend oneself. In Arizona, where gun ownership and the principles of self-defense are woven into the fabric of local law and society, this event reaffirms the rights of homeowners to protect their personal safety.

As investigations continue, the community remains vigilant, and the legal proceedings will undoubtedly serve as a stark reminder of the risks and realities of home invasions.
