I Want My MOTV! – Firearms News

Date:

The early 1980s, I remember them well. Cable companies started stringing lines block by block, and we all anticipated getting television as we had never seen it before, like commercial-free full-length movies just like in the theatre, an all-weather channel, and channels that didn’t sign off at 2 a.m. Every couple of weeks, the new technology crept closer and closer, and you were jealous of the kids down the street who got it first.

Finally, my family had service from Warner Cable company (named after the Hollywood tycoons who were originally from my area). It was great! Like 20 channels with perfect reception – no roof antenna required! But my cousins had something with Armstrong Cable we didn’t have. A channel called MTV. I remember the first video I watched over at their house around 1981- it was a .38 Special full concert (great name for band). Wow, if you liked music (I sure did), then MTV was something you got excited about, especially with the creative mini-movie-like music promo videos. I became part of the “I want my MTV!” campaign to get our cable company to carry it, and they did. Soon, everyone knew what the picture of an astronaut on the moon with MTV flag meant to the music industry.

I have many great memories of watching my favorite rock and pop bands with my friends for years (finished basements were the ideal places to watch MTV btw). Many times, my friends and I would clean our guns in the basement with MTV on – guns like a Colt AR-15 SP1, Ruger Mini-14, M1 Carbine, UZI carbine, a 1911, or grandpa’s .22 rifle, all taken apart on a coffee table while Ted Nugent, KISS, Donnie Iris, or some weird English pop band was playing loudly through a console TV’s speakers. If I only had a time machine…

I still remember thinking to myself, “What if there was TV channel where you could watch firearms shows, hunting shows, and view commercials from gun companies like Smith & Wesson, Colt, Iver Johnson, and others?” It was just a dream. No way that would ever happen. Well, it eventually did about 20 years ago with great shows from the Sportsman Channel and Outdoor Channel. So, if your cable or streaming platform doesn’t offer these channels, you can still watch many of the TV shows plus a lot of extra gun and hunting content on My Outdoor TV, or MOTV for short.
